Our body and mind function because of the life-force energy that flows in it, also called ‘Prana’ or ‘Prana Shakti’ in Sanskrit. The Prana flows through subtle channels called ‘Nadis’, that distribute the energy throughout our body, in a similar way like impulses are carried through our nervous system, or blood is circulated through the network of blood vessels throughout the body. The Nadis cannot be seen by the naked eye, but they can be felt by a sensitive or trained person, and the field of Prana or life-energy, also sometimes referred to as ‘aura’, can also be photographed with more sophisticated technology nowadays, such as Kirlian Photography. Any physical or mental imbalances or diseases reflect on a more subtle level as blockages in these energy channels, and are a result of an improper flow of life-force energy or Prana Shakti. This is also why Pranayama - breathing techniques that allow one to increase and regulate the flow of Prana Shakti in the body - has proven a very effective tool to overcome many physical and mental problems.

The 7 Chakras

The Nadis distribute the Prana Shakti throughout the body, and there are major and minor ‘centers’ in the body where the energy accumulates, is stored, and from where it is again distributed, which are called ‘chakras’. The word chakra basically means ‘wheel’, and it refers to the spiraling movement of the energy in these centers - a little like whirlpools in a flowing river. There are many chakras in and around our body, but references to chakras are usually to the seven main ones, that are placed more or less along our spine.

The 7 Chakras in the Human Body & their locations are as follows:

  1. Mooladhar Chakra - At the base of the spine

  2. Swadhisthana Chakra - Behind the genitals

  3. Manipura Chakra - Navel region

  4. Anahata Chakra - Chest region

  5. Visuddhi Chakra - Throat region

  6. Agna Chakra - Between the eyebrows

  7. Sahastrar Chakra - On top of the head

Energy around these chakras displays in both positive & negative forms.

Let’s see how the energies exhibit at different centres:

  1. Mooladhara Chakra - Enthusiasm and Depression

  2. Swadhisthana Chakra - Creativity and Procreation

  3. Manipura Chakra - Joy & Generosity and Greed & Jealousy

  4. Anahata Chakra - Love and Hatred & Fear

  5. Visuddhi Chakra - Gratitude and Grumbling

  6. Agna Chakra - Awareness and Anger

  7. Sahasrara Chakra - Bliss

When the Prana flows at Anahata Chakra the person is either in Love or Hate or Fear. Any 1 of the 3 emotions is exhibited and not 3 together. This is same for all the Chakras.

How the flow of energy takes places:

If the person prana is at the 6th Chakra and energy is exhibited as anger, then prana moves to the 5th Chakra and energy is exhibited as grumbling. An angry man is often found grumbling and complaining. Further the prana moves down to the 4th Chakra from grumbling to either hatred or fear. The person develops the hatred or fear for the other being for which he is grumbling. If it is not addressed, the prana continues moving down to the 3rd, 2nd & 1st Chakra subsequently wherein it manifests as either greed or jealousy for the being for which he has fear or hatred, then into lust and obsession and finally it culminates into depression at the 1st Chakra.

What leads to the upward flow of energy:

In a reverse scenario, if the prana is exhibited as enthusiasm in the 1st Chakra then it rises to 2nd Chakra and enhances creativity. Further when the person is creative the energy rises on to the 3rd Chakra and the prana flows either as joy or generosity. When the person is joyous and generous the prana further moves to 4th Chakra and energy is exhibited as love. In a person with deep love the energy moves to the 5th Chakra and is exhibited as gratitude. Out of deep love gratitude develops. Then the energy uplifts to the 6th Chakra and awareness dawns. And from 6th Chakra the energy culminates at the 7th Chakra leading to the paramount bliss, the most desirable state.

Individuals go through different emotions which can lead to prana getting stuck at different Chakra.

Different musical instruments play major role in awakening & stimulating the seven chakras as listed below:

1st Chakra - Leather Instruments like Dhol, Tabla, Djembe

2nd Chakra - Wind Instruments like Trumpets, Pipes

3rd Chakra - Strings instruments like Violin

4th Chakra - Finer String instruments like Guitar and Piano

5th Chakra - Hollow Instruments like Flute

6th Chakra - Bells, Cymbal, Chimes and other such metal instruments

7th Chakra - Blowing of the Shankha or conch

When these musical instruments are played it has a significant effect at different centers as mentioned above and the blocked up energy is released. This is the most profound technique recorded in ancient vedic scriptures. Hence, to remove all the blocked up energy from the different energy centers one should religiously attend the Satsangs or Musical Evenings.
